So Nice for Coffee is a worthwhile purchase. Unlike other non-dairy creamers, its taste comes close to dairy and its texture stays thin, not oily.

As far as lactose-free or vegan coffee creamer options, there are few that deserve a spot in your fridge. So Nice for Coffee is one of them.

While its modest brown tetra container blends in with the packaged soy drinks around it, the silky liquid inside stands out. It shines precisely because it's inoffensively mild. It enhances coffee without a beany aftertaste. For those who miss dairy milk, this product will hit the spot. It’s hint of creaminess doesn’t excessively sweeten your cup of joe like other vegan creamers (Silk for Coffee, for example).

The one problem with So Nice for Coffee is its texture – not in your mouth, necessarily, but in the coffee – it clumps together slightly after being poured. But that doesn’t affect the taste of the coffee.

So Nice is just for coffee

Some soy creamers with thick, rich textures find a place in desserts, too. So Nice for Coffee, however, is bland and slightly sour on its own, so it isn't meant to pour over fresh berries. For cooking, try a sweetened or flavoured soy beverage, or try a soy creamer with added sugar or flavour.

Fat and calorie counts

You’re not getting any calcium (or many other nutritional goodies) in this oil-based creamer. But it is low in calories (20 per tablespoon) and low in fat (one gram). Though it’s not a milk or cream substitute when it comes to nutrition, So Nice for Coffee has a calorie and fat count that’s on par with half-and-half-type coffee creamers.

Nutrition

So Nice for Coffee is vegan and lactose-free. It’s also low in sugar (0.5 grams) and less sweet than other vegan creamer brands. In addition, it gets points for including whole organic soybeans, rather than a processed soy product, and for having sugar nearly halfway through the ingredient list.

So Nice for Coffee comes in one flavour only: original.

Ingredients

So Nice for Coffee boasts an ingredient list similar to other non-dairy creamers: Filtered water, organic whole soybeans, canola oil, Maltodextrin, organic cane sugar, sodium bicarbonate, soy lecithin, dipotassium phosphate, sodium citrate, tapioca starch, natural flavour, carageenan.

Additional specifications:

Price: about $2.29

Storage: Shelf-stable until opened; refrigerate after opening

Made by: SoyaWorld, Vancouver, BC.

The verdict: for coffee drinkers looking for a lactose-free or vegan option, So Nice for Coffee is a good one.

Thanks very much for the review, and as a note, the clumping issue has been resolved in all product with expiry dates later than July 2011.
