Shefu Tofu bites by Soyarie are one of the best seasoned tofu products on the market. Perfect for the tofu-wary, these bites excel in both taste and texture

Grocery store shelves are abundant with pre-marinated, ready-to-cook tofu products that make dinner easy. Whether it's tofu patties for burgers, spicy tofu for barbecuing, or sweet ‘n’ sour tofu for stir-fries, it can be hard to decide which are worth buying. Usually, store-bought marinated tofu doesn’t live up to tofu marinated at home. But Soyarie’s Shefu tofu (“tofu chef” is Japanese) is a pleasant departure from the other bland and under-spiced tofu products on the market. It’s flavourful and has a great texture – not at all like typical tofu.

Shefu Tofu BBQ Flavoured Bites are one offering in Soyarie’s line of shefu tofus. Shefu also comes in slices and patties.

Shefu Tofu Nutrition and Ingredients

Shefu tofu has an interesting texture that isn't quite like most tofu products. Likely, the departure from regular tofu stems from its varied ingredients: besides tofu, Shefu’s building blocks include onions, sweet potatoes, carrots, and sunflower seeds. The result is a decidedly un-tofu-like food with a firm, satisfying texture that maintains excellent nutritional value. And it doesn`t taste like vegetables.

Shefu Tofu BBQ Flavoured Tofu Bites packs big nutrition in its small package. A single serving is generous, packing in 14 grams of vegan protein, 14 grams of fat (1 gram of which is omega-3) and 200 calories. Like most firm tofu products, it also contains 10% of the daily value for calcium and 20% for iron.

Shefu Tofu Meal Ideas

The cooking instructions on the Shefu Tofu package are simply “heat and serve”. Here are three ways to cook firm tofu, but grilling or barbequing is best.

While plain tofu contains only natural fats from soybeans, Shefu Tofu has oil added as part of the marinade. This means it benefits from a longer cooking time at a lower temperature, rather than a high-temperature searing.

Shefu tofu is versatile:

  • It makes the perfect addition (or meat substitution) in shish kebab recipes. Try these shish kebabs with fresh vegetables and shefu tofu: they’re perfect for a summertime weekday meal.
  • Serve the bites as an appetizer or snack with some dip (ranch or curried mayonnaise).
  • Wrap in tortillas with lettuce and tomatoes for lunch.
  • Cook it and top a big salad instead of using chicken.

Shefu Tofu Allergen Information

Contains soy, sunflower seeds and may contain traces of peanuts and sesame seeds.

Where to Buy Shefu Tofu

Shefu tofu is available at speciality stores like Whole Foods for about $4.
